The History of Singapore and Singapore Girl

Married to Mr. Jeffrey Stone at the time, Christina Balsara began her creative profession by composing and executing a complex idea, an island for party – “sarong Island” that quickly became the ideal destination for food and entertainment in Singapore.

As life took a different turn and she had to let go of this beautiful island. Letting go of her brain child and her creation wasn't easy and it made her sad. To perk up her spirits, she decided to take a museum trip.

During this journey, Christina left Singapore for multiple museum visits and ceramic appreciation trips. While there, she had an internal awakening, realizing that her true calling in life was to create Singaporean scents. Christina came back to Singapore and invented the Singapore Girl perfume. Shortly after she went full force into the perfume line, and Perfumes of Orient was born.

It did not take long for her fragrance to become popular. In fact, in the early 1970s, Perfumes of Orient and another massive perfume business called Perfumes of Singapore, owned by her soon to be next husband, Mr. Dadi Balsara, merged to become Perfumes of Singapore Pte Ltd.

There were at least two factories that produced thousands of this perfume each month, and it was sold both domestically and internationally. In 1997, Singapore Girl perfume became the top prize offered at the Singapore Manufacturer Association as well.

In 1983, there was a rough patch in business, like most company's experience. During this time, Mr. Dadi Balsara created another scent, known as Singapore Bliss, for a company called SIA and was a huge success when launched in 1988.

After a long reign of impactful creations, in the year 2000, the now older Mrs. Christina Balsara and wanted to dial down her business to a smaller scale. Finally in 2007, Perfume of Singapore closed down the factories and shut down the business in 2008, and that was the last bit of their iconic presence.
