Oud is called "musky luxury" for a reason. It is afterall one of the most expensive perfume ingredient in the world. Oud is an arabic word and is extremely popular in Middle East, but it is a resin from the tropical tree that grows widely in SE Asia and is thought to have originated in Assam, India.
It is one of nature's cleverest & rarest creation. When agarwood tree becomes infected by phialophora parasitica, the tree produces a dark, dense and fragrant resin to protect itself. This resin is oud.
Different agarwood resins from different plant can smell different and the best one, and the most pungent one, is from Cambodia. A kilo of agar wood yields just 1ml of resin, whcih can cost $250-$300.
