Jewel – a room fragrance by Singapore Memories
Jewel, as its name indicates was created to denote the beauty and benefits that the opulent flowers and plants that Asia have to offer. It includes three of the most precious orchids that are used for therapeutic purposes, and can also be consumed. These are Anoectochilus, Ludisia discolor, and macodes petola.

Anoectochilus are a genus of orchids that are also commonly called the marbled jewel or filigree orchids. The species can be found extensively in southeastern Asia, Japan and on some islands of the Pacific.
These small terrestrial herbs have an upright flowering stem and dark colored leaves with contrasting veins. The beautiful contrasts of their dark green or brownish purple leaves with their network of silvery or reddish veins are just part of their beauty. Their small delicate flowers are openly arranged on the stalk.
The Chinese use the “Jewel” orchid for countless home remedies and the plants are boiled in water to release their medicinal qualities. They treat a variety of symptoms that include abdominal and chest pain, diabetes, hypertension and conditions of the kidneys, liver and spleen.
The bioactive compounds in Anoectochilus roxburghii are known throughout Asia because of its antibiotic, anti- viral and anti-inflammatory properties. The properties of the plant also act as a sedative. Meanwhile, Japanese scientists have found 10 compounds in A. formosanus that protect from hepatic disease if the plant is grown in the wild.
Ludisia discolor is another of the jewel orchids that is mostly found in the warmer and more humid parts of Asia, Ludisia is a genus that only has one species. Usually found growing on the floor of forests, they have small, individual white flowers that grow in clusters on their upright stalks. In Singapore, the Ludisia blooms in March. This beautiful orchid has more value than just decorative and is used for medicinal purposes throughout Asia. It helps relieve coughs, treats TB and anorexia, but is also beneficial to the lungs and stops bleeding. Old Thai remedies reveal that it was one of 57 herbs used to treat insect bites.
Macodes petola (Blume) Lindl is the third important jewel orchid and is found in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. In Indonesia the juice squeezed from its leaves was believed to rectify myopia, and the legend there says that the magical plant arose from the fragments of a beautiful scarf that belonged to a goddess.
